Game-changing solar powered, onsite emission-free hydrogen production unit is being built in Mariestad, Sweden

Mariestad is an international model area for sustainable social development. Now, the municipality, the local energy company VänerEnergi and the company Nilsson Energy are building an innovative energy system for solar powered hydrogen production to the already established hydrogen station next to highway E20. The investment ensures that the hydrogen produced onsite in Mariestad is completely renewable and emission-free. The solar radiation over the solar cell park will also be able to be longterm stored in hydrogen to be used when the sun is not shining by producing electricity and heat through fuel cell technology.

On November 23, it was announced that the company Nilsson Energy won the contract to build an independent off-grid hydrogen production plant connected to the existing hydrogen fueling station in Mariestad municipality. The parties met in the town hall in Mariestad on December 6th to sign the agreement and informed the assembled media about the revolutionary energy system.

Nilsson Energy has been contracted to build an off-grid energy system solution, including onsite hydrogen production for continuous refueling of the hydrogen fueling station, built next to the highway E20 in Mariestad. The contract also includes building a solar park, whose solar energy constitutes the fuel for the system. Through the investment, it is ensured that the hydrogen produced is completely renewable and emission-free. Technical leader and Founding Father of Nilsson Energy, Mr. Hans-Olof Nilsson, renowned energy pioneer, is passionate about renewable off-grid energy systems. Together with his colleagues Mr. Pontus Lundgren and Mrs. Martina Wettin, Hans-Olof Nilsson expresses his excitement about building the world unique energy system in Mariestad.

- Nilsson Energy is the supplier of complete energy systems that are easy for the customer to use. We have the "recipe" for harvesting solar and wind energy, adding water and building completely self-sufficient energy system solutions for all types of energy consumers. As in Mariestad’ s case, it can be about mobility, but we are equally happy to provide housing, business and / or industrial environment solutions. Being the first in the world contracted to build an off-grid hydrogen fueling station "fed" by the sun is obviously fun and important. The way a municipality and the local energy company VänerEnergi, now shows leadership, is also exciting, says Hans-Olof Nilsson, founder and partner in Nilsson Energy

In close cooperation with its component suppliers, Nilsson Energy is now prepared for at rapid expansion for its stationary and modular energy system solutions RE8760.

- There will be more exciting projects soon. Establishing and exporting emission-free and easy-to-use renewable energy system solutions, including recycling of water if the customer so demands due to water-shortage feels very important. Together with its subcontractors and partners, Nilsson Energy will hopefully also soon be a strong export product in line with Mariestad’ s desire for new industrialization initiatives.

Stored energy provides multiple uses

The new energy system enables Mariestad to produce solar energy and by Power-to-Gas do seasonal storage in hydrogen, 100 percent renewable. The hydrogen will initially be used primarily for the refueling of fuel cell vehicles.

-Hydrogen is an excellent medium for long-term storage of energy. It is both economical and safe. Excess hydrogen can also produce electricity and feed the grid, as a power reserve if the need arises. In event of a crisis, we can also lean against a stored hydrogen reserve, explains Harald Bouma, Project Coordinator, VänerEnergi AB.

Sweden's first off-grid pre-schools

The solar cell park and the energy system solution at the hydrogen fueling station will be in place late autumn 2018. At the same time, project preparations have been initiated to build two pre-schools with innovative renewable energy systems. The two schools will be selfsufficient, or at least partly self-sufficient, using solar power. The surplus of energy might also be stored in hydrogen and be converted via fuel-cell technology during the dark autumn and winter months.
